  1. Two experiences or incidents that may have influenced Myer's writing career and writing style are his mom reading him magazines and his dad telling him stories. Myers said that it expanded his creativity. He said, "When I was a child my father talked to me, told me absurdly wonderful stories. It was these stories that allowed me to release the balloon of my imagination, and to let it soar." He also said, "It was my mother, reading her magazines, that furthered that imagination." It was his mother's readings and his father's stories that influenced his writing career and his writing style.

  2. Based on the biography posted and other readings we have done in class, the two experiences or incidents in Myer's life that may have influenced his writing career and writing style are, his mother reading to him, his father telling him stories, and the death of his brother. I believe these experiences influenced him because if his mother had not read magazines with him, he wouldn't know how to read or write. As it states in the autobiography we read to him "Florence had taught herself to read, and then she taught her adopted son by letting him read the true romance magazines stories she liked". So by this phrase you can tell by teaching herself to read she influenced her son to read. And if his dad never told him stories, he never would have been introduced to different genres or inspirational stories or open his imagination. I also believe that the death of his brother influenced him because, he would not have gone to war and experience it himself and write a book in his brother's honor.

  15. Experiences and incidents that may have influenced Walter Dean Myer's writing are, first Walter was born in the middle of the Great Depression, between 1929 and 1941.In those days Blacks and Hispanics were poor, had no resources, and had no life necessities, so that experience gave him more inspiration to write about the poverty of Black and Hispanics.
Secondly Myer's moved to Harlem when he was a child where he would see children playing in the park with drug dealers, and gangs. That experience made him more to write about Black and Hispanics people so that when they read a book of his, they would see how children suffer and that children would stay out of drug dealing and gangs.Thirdly Myer's little brother died in combat on his first day in the army and Myer's wrote Fallen Angels for him. The reason he wrote this is to explain the life of his brother and how he died

  16. One Incident of Walter Dean Myers is when he wrote the book 'Fallen Angel' because he wanted to honor his brother when he died in the Wietnam War.So Walter wanted to show his respect for him because he loved him so much. Myers worked really hard on the book to inspire his brother Sonny.
As a teenager, Walter got into more trouble at school and he became disillusioned over his lot in life. When Myers dropped out of high school he wanted to write novels to teens to explain what had happened in his past, so his readers won't make the same mistakes he did.

  17. Two effects that changed Myers' life were his moving to Harlem and the death of his brother on his first day in Vietnam. First his style of writing may have changed due to his moving to Harlem. He wrote about kids sharing parks with drug dealers(he did this since this is what he saw). He wrote mostly to show young readers that this wasn't the correct path to take.
Another experience that might have inspired him to write may have been his brother's death. He felt that he should write a book about his brother's horrible experience in the army. He did this so that young adults wouln't have to go through his brother's expirience. This is what I think inspired him to write the way he does today.

  18. Walter Dean Myers was influenced by all his experiences in his life. One example would be when he was in the army and his half brother got shot. In his honor he wrote a book for him called "Fallen Angel". That would be one of his incidents. Another experiences would be when his mother read to him as a child her True Romance book, then he knew that he was interested in books. He liked the books but, he mostly liked how his foster mother read to him. Also when the kids in his old school bullied him because of his speech impediment he got inspired to write a book called "Bad Boy".

  19. One incident or experience in Myers life that may have influenced his writing career and writing style is when he was a child and his father read him stories. Myer acknowledges it when he says, "when I was a child my father talked to me, told me absurdly wonderful stories. It was these stories that allowed me to release the balloon of my imagination."

Another incident or experience that may have influenced his writing career and writing style is when he was a child he read his mothers magazines. He said, "It was my mother, reading her magazines, that furthered that imagination, gave it order, defined it more in words than pictures." it shows that reading her magazines that defined his writing style and furthered his imagination helping his writing career.

  20. Based on Myers' biography, an event that has influence or caused the way he writes is when he was younger and his foster mother taught him how to read using magazines and when his foster father told him stories about himself and his grandfather. The way his father told him stories had opened up his imagination and made him want to tell stories to others. When his mother was teaching Myers (as well as herself) to read, they couldn't afford books so she would read him stories she liked from her True Romance magazines. This had helped him further his imagination and had also started off his love of reading. These things influenced his writing career by inspiring him to open his mind to be creative.

Another event that could have influenced the way Myers writes is when his school teachers helped him through his speech impediment by finding him a speech therapist and having him practice readng and speaking outloud. By helping him with his speech impediment they also helped him realize his love of reding and writing. This may have influenced the way he writes by creating posibilities that others would not have seen in his stories to help create a better future for the characters in his books, therefore, inspiring his readers to find better opportunities for themselves.

  21. Based on the readings, two experiences or incidents in Myers’ life that I think influenced his writing career and writing style, were his parents telling him stories and the problems he faced as a teenager. When he was young his mom used to read him romance novels. Plus his dad would tell him stories so that helped him a lot and it’s good to learn things at an early age to help him in the long run to develop his imagination. In Walters’s point of view it taught him how to be a good writer. As a result, he is a really good author.

When he was young, he had some problems during his early age of life. One of them was a speech problem, as a result of his speech problems he had a hard time saying certain words. Most of the words he couldn’t say, he wrote them into his poetry. He expressed his ideas and feelings into the poems he wrote. That is when and why he started writing poems.

  22. Walter dean Myers may have been influenced by many things in his life. One major event that could have influenced him was his speech impediment. According to the story, his grade school teacher told him that since he had a speech impediment that if he wrote more often he would learn more words and his speech would develop better. While he was writing more and more each day he began to love writing. This is one of the reasons why he began writing books.

Another major event in his life was when Walters’s brother got shot. According to the story, Walter wrote a book about his brother & his life with his brother. It also included how his brother got shot and what had happened that day. The story Walter wrote about his brother is called “Fallen Angel “. That book was dedicated to his brother.

  23. There are many terrible and inspiring experiences in Walter Dean Myers’ life, but two stand out the most. The first inspiring experience that caught my eye was that Walter Dean Myers was encouraged to write by his adoptive parents. In his story “Bridges” it says his mother would read him magazines and romance novels when he was small. It also says his dad would tell him stories passed down from his ancestors. His parents helped him by passing down there knowledge to him and introduced him to the world of books.
Another inspiring part of Walters’s life was when he joined the army. In the interview I read, Walter joined the army at age 17. To me I think the army was Walter’s escape. He grew up in Harlem and it wasn’t the best place for a child to be raised. There were gangs, drugs, and so much violence. So he found his escape in the army. Being a part of the army helped Walter in the sense that he grew some backbone, became tougher, and no longer needed to be afraid or have to hide in his books. But he was able to write books on his experience in the army. These two experiences are inspiring and touched my heart. These two experience helped sculpture Walter into who he is today and encouraged him with his writing.

  24. Two incidents in myers' life that influenced his writting career were that his adopted mom read to him. Another thing that might have influenced is that he always tried to write great stories so that he could get approval from his dad. As he mentions, "It was my mother, reading her magazines, that furthered that imagination, gave it order, defined it more in words than pictures." If his mom wouldn't have read to him he wouldn't have furthered his imagination.
His writting became so great because of the effort he put into his stories, being the same effort he out into getting his father's approval. As Myers' says, "When i was a child my father talked to me, told me absurdly wonderful stories". It was those stories that he wrote to get his father's approval.

  25. One thing that i think might have influenced Walter Dean Myer's writting carrer is that his mom used to read to him. This i think influenced him because he liked it when his foster mom read to him. This inspired him to write books. The seconed thing that think may have influenced Walter Dean myer's was he had a speech inpediment. This i think influenced him because people probably made fun of the way he talked. So instead, talking openly, he used writing as a way to express his thoughts.

  26. One experience in Myers' life that may have inspired him to write is, his speech problem. Myers' speech impediment helped him because "he cultivated a habit of writing poetry and short stories and he also acquired in himself an early love of reading." Myers' love for reading inspired him to write more.

Another experience would be when his high school teacher found out that Myers was dropping out of school. She told him to "Keep on writing no matter what happens." Myers' then remembered those words and kept writing when he came home in the evenings after work. Those words kept him motivated throughout his life.

  27. One experience or incident in Myers life that may have influenced his writing career and writing style is Myers’ brother. Myers wrote the “Fallen Angels” because he wanted to honor his brother that had died during the Vietnam War. Myers worked really hard on the book for his brother. Myers really loved his brother so much.

Another experience or incident was that his foster parents were so loving and caring it strengthened him even when he had forgotten his source. A second experience or incident is that the George Bruce Branch of the public library was his most treasured place. He thought that he could take some books home through the streets without too many incidents. When he started to check out more books, he started to love books at the same time. At 16 years old, he decided to quit school. He thought that getting a job was not bad, so he choose to write books, and as he began writing more and more books, he started to love it.

  29. One action in Walter Dean Myers' life that may have influenced him is his foster mother reading "True Romances" to him. Instead of reading nursery stories to him,she read mature, love story books which contained an adult perspective which many people don't get when they are little. Walter Dean Myers seemed to have an adult like mind-set when he was little, which helped him appear to be "bright" to others and inspired him to write stories.

Another experience in Walter Dean Myers' life is him writing books to seek the final approval from his foster father.During Walter Dean Myers' childhood,he did not know that his foster father could not read. It was only when his father died that Walter realized that his father could not read. Walter also realized that he spent so many years writing books and trying to get his fathers confirmation that it was okay to be a writer, but it was all for a lost cause. This probably inspired Walter Dean Myers evenmore than before to do the thing he loved;write.

  30. Two experiences or incidents that affected Myer's writing career and writing style is that he was often in trouble with the law."he haas been in many fights and has been to jail". Myer's experience in jail was a rough part of his life. Which then gave him the inspiration to write stories about these types of situations. An experience or incident that also affected Myer's writing career and writing style is that he grew up in Harlem."Harlem is a rough place". The qoute states that he grew up in a dangerouse place with gangs and drug dealers. Which then gives him the idea to write about people who are affected by it.

  31. Based on the biography posted, two experiences that may have changed Walter Dean Myers writing style are his experiences with poverty. He wrote these stories from the eyes of his former self. He uses old experiences and event from the past to tell stories of teeneagers learning to deal with life and trying to find themselves to young men trying to deal with the strains and stress of serving the country in the armed forces.

He also uses the letters his brother sent him from the during the war in Vietnam. His brothers letters said he was absolutely tired of all the fighting and how it was boring monotounus work. Using these letters and his own perspective of the millitary to write the book "Fallen Angels" in honor of his brother who died during his first battleat war.

Another experience that may have changed Mr.Myers writing style is his mother reading him True Romance magazines and giving him comic books to read. He probably learned to read from his mother reading him something then him attempting to read it himself. It helped most likely, that the comics and books that he read were probably low-level and easy to read.

  32. The first experience in Myer's life is when he had a speech impediment. With that he couldn't speak or pronounce words right. That led him to write poetry, short stories which led him also to love reading. With that he started writing more and more. With such passion for it he became more and more skilled for it. Maybe that’s why it became a passion which became his long life career.

Myer's second experience in life was when Myer's was a child his father talked to him, telling him stories. Those stories led him to develop his imagination for his own stories. Also the stories which his grandfather told him allowed him to take the world of his imagination and make it his own. His mother also read him magazines that open his imagination further. Those stories encouraged him to write his own stories and make him the writer he is today.

  37. One thing that influenced Walter’s writing career was his childhood, when Walter was younger his mother would read her magazines to Walter and Walter started to read them by himself. So, another reason was there were not a lot of black authors when he was a child, and he wanted to change that. So he started to write and publish his own books.

Two things that influenced or affected his writing was that he writes mostly for young people because he says “The young adult and middle grade periods of my life were so vivid and in looking back, so influential in how I would live the rest of my life.” That affected how he writes by writing about his childhood instead of something else like fantasy. Walter also wrote a book named “Monster.” It is about a teen on trial for an accomplice to murder, based on his experience of going to jail. He wrote this to teach a lesson to not follow in his footsteps of when he was a kid.

Another thing that influenced his writing is that his mother would read love poems to him when he was a child. This influenced his writing because he writes about love and he also writes poems.
