Discussion # 4 Missing the Signs

“When somebody is so special you don’t always listen closely enough to what they are saying.”

Discuss two instances when Spoon does not listen closely enough and so misses the clues/ warning signs that he is being given. Be sure to describe what important information he misses as well as what this reveals about Spoon himself.

  1. One instance is that when he came home from Wallingford. His mother sat down with him and told him that something was wrong with Gabi he didn't listen to the clue words because,he is deeply in love with her. This shows that spoon is kind of stubborn because he only listens to what he wants to he and wants to get what he wants.
Another instance is that when Gabi and Spoon were on the roof of her building. He wanted a kiss from her and she was saying I NEED TO GO PICK SOMETHING UP FOR MY MOM DOWNTOWN and if her mom needed something the hospital would have gave it to her. That means she was going to probably get her drugs or meet up with someone else.

  2. discussion 3: this show poverty in Gabi's home. the first thing how the authors show is when Gabi's mom told her to go to downtown to go fill out the welfare paper and get more food stamps. this show poverty because this shows that people with lower class have to get because they cant afford to buy food. another circumstance in Gabi's home to show that she is poor that when spoon first came from school he went to Gabi's house and when he went to ring the bell he had to rub the two the wires. another circumstance is when spoon went in Gabi's house and seen old furniture in the house and he quote " the old stove and it love it was an old antique".

the difference between spoon house and Gabi's house. the first thing is how gabi's house is different is that gabi house looks older. there's only one parent lives in the house but she in the hospital. and now gabi haves to run the house because the grandfather is blind and her little brothers is only 13 and he can't run the house. and in spoon house his parents are still together and they are not on welfare and food stamps. and his house is clean and he doesn't have any brother and sister.

  3. disscussion4: “When somebody is so special you don’t always listen closely enough to what they are saying.” the author quote this because some people really don't hear what the person is saying becasue they could be telling you something that is important and you are just looking at them and wondering. and this author is says that you have to be smart and listen to them and not just think about their body and how their first children going to look like.

two instances when Spoon does not listen closely enough and so misses the clues/ warning signs that he is being given. the first instance when spoon mom was talking to him and spoon said something about gabi's mom and then the mom said she know that family is not doing well. because this is a clue to spoon that gabi is not doing well because the mom said that the family is not doing well and spoon only knows that gabi's mom is not doing well. the second instance that gave spoon a clues that gabi is not doing well is when she quote " do you know how easy it is not to be strong". this give you a warning sign that gabi has fallen to the beast and she's trying to tell spoon.

  4. The first instance where Spoon does not listen closely enough is when Spoon does not notice Gabi’s mother is ill. He goes over to her house, but when Gabi is explaining to him that her mother is in the hospital it’s like the words went through one ear and left through the other, telling her she looks good and focusing on her body, like he didn’t hear a thing about what she said about her mom. When he went home it was his mother that told him that Gabi’s mother was not doing well, and he was disappointed that he hadn’t sensed Gabi’s mother was ill.

The second instance where Spoon does not listen closely is when he was talking to Gabi and asked her why she didn’t want to go to Chanel’s party. She had said, “I’m stressed out”;” I think I’m coming down with something. Maybe mono”. Mono is a kissing disease, but how could she get it if she hadn’t kissed Spoon in over four months? Spoon did not get what Gabi was saying and only thought about her kisses and how he was jealous of whomever or whatever was keeping her from. him
