Discussion #3 Signs of Poverty

Gabi apologizes for her phone being disconnected, saying: "Habla poverty?" in a letter to Spoon. How does the author show you that poverty in Gabis home and circumstances? What are the differences between her household and Spoons?

  1. The author shows that n Gabi's home there is an old gas stove and so she says that it comes in handy during those winter cold day's.When the landlord doesn't send up the heat. This is a sign of poverty because it shows that they cant afford a new stove. The differences between her household and spoon's.Is that Gabi's household is small tight space room for three and there's four people counting her sick mother. When on the other hand Spoon's household is normal comfortable and has enough space for three people a kitchen,a dining table, sofa and a television.

  2. The author shows that there is poverty in Gabi's home by illustrating that Gabi's doorbell was still broken, with wires coming from the door frame. Spoon had to take two wires and touch them together. This shows that Gabi's family doesn't have enough money to fix it.

Another example is when Spoon walked into her kitchen. The stove in her kitchen was old enough to look like an antique. When the gas oven was on full blast it looked like a portable inferno, which came in handy in winter when the landlord didn't send up any heat.

The difference between Gabi's household and Spoon's is that spoon has both parents around other than Gabi. Spoon had enough money to send him to a Prep-School, but Gabi can't afford to go to college. Gabi has to take care of her family, especially now since her mother died and she only has her brother and blind grandfather.
